Why I Fell in Love with Santa Margherita Ligure! (And You Might Too)

Why I Fell in Love with Santa Margherita Ligure! (And You Might Too)

Santa Margherita Ligure had been on my radar for a while.

You’ve probably seen the Santa Margherita wine—it’s everywhere. But here’s the thing: that crisp, well-known Pinot Grigio is actually from the Veneto region, up in northeastern Italy. The label is named after this town, likely for its charm, coastal elegance, and timeless appeal—not because the wine comes from here. And that had me curious. I needed to see for myself what kind of place could inspire that kind of branding—and now I get it.

Santa Margherita is stunning.

It sits along the Ligurian Riviera, nestled between Portofino and the Cinque Terre. It used to be a fishing village, but over the last century, it’s evolved into a chic, laid-back destination that still feels authentic. Locals call it “Santa,” and it has that perfect blend of elegance and approachability. It’s walkable, full of lovely boutiques and great dining, and has the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and stay a while.

And if you’re looking for the perfect place to stay?

Look no further than Grand Hotel Miramare!

As a preferred partner, this hotel had been on my radar not just for its reputation and beauty, but also because of the exclusive perks I can offer my clients when they stay here. I needed to experience it in person—and it did not disappoint.

This hotel has a storied past—it was one of the first grand hotels on the Ligurian Riviera and has been welcoming guests since the early 1900s. In fact, Guglielmo Marconi transmitted the first radiotelegraph signal in history from the hotel’s terrace in 1933. Over the years, it’s drawn notable guests, including Vivien Leigh—yes, Gone with the Wind’s Scarlett O’Hara—and Laurence Olivier. The property is still family-owned and lovingly run by the Fustinoni family, giving it a warmth and charm that’s hard to replicate.

I had the pleasure of spending time with Susanna, part of the hotel’s guest experience and sales leadership team, who walked me through the property and shared its incredible story. Her warmth, knowledge, and pride in the hotel were immediately evident—and it was clear that every detail here is thoughtfully considered.

Let me paint the picture for you:

  • The service: Top tier. Coming back from a full day of exploring to find slippers laid out and a glass of water by your bedside—it’s those thoughtful touches that make all the difference.

  • The cocktails: I had one made with gin and balsamic vinegar, and it was incredible. Creative, balanced, and so very Italian.

  • The breakfast: Served with panoramic sea views that make your morning cappuccino feel even more luxurious.

  • The beach club: Right on the water. If you're a guest, your lounger, towel, and umbrella are all taken care of—just show up and soak up the Ligurian sun.

  • The pool: Sparkling and serene, surrounded by lush greenery—it’s a peaceful haven to lounge between adventures.

  • The gardens: Impeccably kept, and full of quiet corners and Mediterranean beauty. They add such a sense of calm and elegance to the entire property.

Insider Tip: See Cinque Terre by Private Boat for a More Relaxed Experience

While I love the Cinque Terre (who doesn’t?), it can get incredibly busy, especially during peak season. One of the things I love about staying in Santa Margherita is that you can enjoy the peaceful elegance of this area and take a private boat over to the Cinque Terre—skipping the crowds, train stations, and chaos. It's the best of both worlds.

This little corner of Liguria truly left a mark on me. It’s a place I’d return to in a heartbeat.. beautiful, relaxing, and just far enough off the tourist track to feel special.

If Santa Margherita’s now on your radar too, I’d love to help you experience it the way it deserves to be done—beautifully, seamlessly, and with all the little details thought of. Your time off is valuable, and I don’t take that lightly. Just reach out whenever you're ready!

A heartfelt thank you to Susanna and the entire team at Grand Hotel Miramare for such a warm welcome and a truly memorable stay. Your hospitality, attention to detail, and genuine care made this visit so special.

I’m already counting the days until I return!
